Nutrition Therapy

Dr. Lentine treats food as medicine. Rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all diet, our providers use advanced testing and your unique health history to identify root causes of illness and create highly personalized nutrition and lifestyle plans tailored to your specific biochemical needs.

What is Nutrition Therapy?

Nutrition therapy is using diet to treat and prevent illness, and restore the body to a natural healthy equilibrium. Nutritionists believe that sub-clinical deficiencies of minerals and vitamins are responsible for much disease and weakness in the body.

Examples of conditions resulting from sub-clinical deficiencies include fatigue, lethargy and susceptibility to colds and viruses.

The Western Diet

Westerners tend to be overfed but undernourished. The foods we eat are far less nutritious than they appear thanks to intensive farming methods, pesticides, additives and preservatives.

We now know that food intolerance and allergies significantly contribute to various conditions such as asthma, eczema and rheumatoid arthritis.

But on a more positive note, we also know that certain types of food can actually support and stimulate the body’s intrinsic ability to heal itself.

A Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is one in which the food you eat contains all the nutrients needed by the body for it to grow, heal and to function on a day-to-day basis. Diets that are low in fat and cholesterol, and high in whole grains, dietary fiber, fruits and vegetables, are healthier and provide more energy.

Taking Supplements

Not all supplements are created equal. There are different grades of nutrients.

The supplement companies we recommend are considered Nutraceuticals.  They are extensively tested.  These supplements use the highest grade ingredients and follow stringent production protocol to ensure they are not compromised.

They have independent audits to ensure quality metrics are met.

The key benefits to using high quality nutraceuticals include

  • Restoring nutritional deficiencies
  • Boosting immune system
  • Helping to prevent chronic conditions
  • Antioxidant benefits

Recommended Foods and Supplements

Eating the right kind of food can go a long way in helping your body’s own healing forces. You need sulphur-containing foods to repair and maintain bone, cartilage and connective tissue. Foods high in sulphur are – asparagus, eggs, garlic and onions.

Eat less saturated fat and more alkaline-forming foods like millet, organic fruits and vegetables.

Other good foods are green leafy vegetables, fresh vegetables, non-acidic fresh fruit (avoid oranges, plums and rhubarb), whole grains, oatmeal, brown rice and fish.

Certain foods may aggravate various musculoskeletal conditions and therefore be avoided. They are dairy products, gluten (as found in wheat, oats, barley and rye), corn, sugar and members of the nightshade family – potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and tobacco.

Reduce your intake of acid-forming foods such as tea, coffee, alcohol, red meat, biscuits and cakes.

Food sensitivities and intolerances are frequently related to gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic enzyme deficiencies, chronic inflammatory conditions, and autoimmune diseases.

Who Needs A Nutrition Check-Up?

You do, if you:

  • Have high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure – or relatives with these conditions.
  • Struggle with creeping obesity and dislike your body image.
  • Routinely go “on” and “off” diets, only to regain the weight you lost.
  • Take vitamin pills…or wonder if you should.
  • Feel chronically fatigued or routinely lack energy to train at your best.
  • Obsess about food and have undesired binges that seem out of control.
  • Eat on the run and survive on hit-or-miss meals.
  • Are discontent with your current eating patterns.
  • Want to invest in your health and future well-being, as well as that of your family.

FAQs About Nutrition Therapy

How is functional nutrition different from traditional dietary advice?

Conventional nutrition typically provides standardized dietary guidelines for the general public. Functional nutritional therapy takes a hyper-personalized approach, considering your unique genetics, gut microbiome, lifestyle, and environment to fix the root cause of symptoms rather than just managing them.

What health issues can nutritional therapy help resolve?

Providers frequently use targeted diets to address complex chronic conditions. This includes autoimmune diseases, gastrointestinal issues (like IBS or leaky gut), hormonal imbalances, chronic fatigue, metabolic syndrome, and persistent inflammation.

Will I have to take a lot of supplements?

Not necessarily. We utilize supplements to correct targeted deficiencies or support healing, the primary goal is a “food-first” approach. Supplements are used strategically and based on lab testing rather than guesswork.

In today's medical world, so many doctors no longer look at the patient holistically. I love how the physicians look at you as a whole and treat you like a person. They consider all of your questions and concerns and they truly listen. You never feel rushed or pushed aside

For over a decade of going to specialists, having CAT Scans, x-rays, and being misdiagnosed for my continuous symptoms, after visiting Saleha and receiving thorough bloodwork I finally got the correct diagnosis – I had Lyme disease. Saleha is a wonderful and caring doctor, and her medical assistant Almina is very attentive and kind. I am truly grateful for my recovery and I highly recommend this practice!

I went to so many doctors with no answers. A coworker told me how amazing she was. Her office was not close to me but I was desperate for answers so I went. I was so glad I did. She uncovered my issues and got me well again I am truly grateful for her medical guidance.

I can not say enough wonderful tings about the competence and professionalism of Dr. Nancy Lentine and her staff. Recently, I had to have some very serious surgery. Although I had a lot of confidence in my surgeon, I didn't have it in his staff. Dr. Lentine assured that I had through and complete surgical clearance. They made my surgery happen. In addition, her ongoing care has improved my health immensely. Thanks to her, I get bone density results that are improving over time. Amazing!!!

My review is based on the care I receive from Dr. Lentine and her NPs. She takes the time to listen to all concerns and is thorough in her evaluation of a patient as a whole person. She wants her patients to feel well and will do what it takes to get to the bottom of any major/chronic issues. Most other doctors are quick to write a prescription or refer you to a specialist and send you on your way. Dr. Lentine looks at the big picture and offers a balanced approach of both traditional medicine and natural supplements to help her patients get on the path to wellness. Regarding staff, over the last 5+ years I have not experienced the level of rudeness indicated by so many others. I have found most of them willing to answer questions and while they may not be overly cheerful, they get the job done.

Love the staff at Dr.Nancy Lentine's office. We see the PA Seleha, she is very thorough, professional and takes time with her patients. I am never intimidated to ask questions. Also the supporting staff is very courteous and a pleasure to communicate with. Alina is the best, very sweet, friendly and personable. They never make you wait. I also appreciate when they inform me which services or tests will not be covered by my insurance. This helps with unexpected costs. All in all, I highly recommend Dr. Nancy Lentine's practice!

I have been going to Dr. Lentine's practice for over 10 years. Saleha Farzaie is my physician and I love her! She is a quick thinker, a great listener, and makes sure that I get enough exercise, eat right, take the right supplements, and minimize stress. I was so impressed with how she helped me when I had Covid. After the initial teledoc, she scheduled 2 follow up teledocs to make sure that I was getting better. She offered great care protocols that I could easily follow and they worked. And just in case I was not able to take detailed notes, she had all of the protocols added to my patient portal so that I could reference them. To make draws convenient, there is a Quest Diagnostics phlebotomist on site.

I was at Dr Lentine's office today and I just felt the need to share what good care I get each time I am there. My provider is Saleha and she is wonderful. She's very knowledgeable and always goes out of her way to be sure I am well taken care of. The staff is warm and caring as well. Christine, Almia, Mary and Trish alway treat me kindly. Rosie the lab technician is so great. Honestly, I look forward to going to this office. I have not up to this time had the opportunity to meet Dr. Lentine but I'm sure she is top notch!
